I have an absolute gem of a book to bring to your attention today, from one of the UK’s fine stable of small publishers, the Rose Press. Jocasta is a re-interpreatation of some of the most important – and oldest – plays in literary history, the Theban Plays by Sophocles. Here Brian Aldiss – surely [...]

Robert Crumb, probably one of the most famous cartoonists of the last hundred years (if not the most famous), is receiving a lot of (overdue in our opinion) attention right now (not least in the Guardian this week). A new collection/autobiography – the R Crumb Handbook – has been released and a major retrospective of [...]

Calvin got in touched with us today to tell us about a book he’s working on (due for publication next year) which is a fashion and design title on a subject close to our collective chests here – vintage T-shirts. He’s trying to track down some of the original cult film and SF T-shirts of [...]

Dark Horse has announced the first Hellboy mini-series for far too long. Hellboy: the Island #1 (of 2) has our favourite big, red guy washing up on an island (surprise!) where he is tempted by singing dead men and stubbornly decides to ignore good advice from and old enemy. This is to be a sequel [...]

My Glaswegian colleague Jim in the Buchanan Street FPI tells me that the Odeon Cinema in Glasgow’s Renfield Street (no idea if it was named after Dracula’s henchman, sorry) will be showing the trailer for the new Star Wars movie, Revenge of the Sith. Bloomsbury have revealed the cover (or two covers if you want to be pedantic, since there is the now-customary ‘adult’ cover as well) of the next Harry Potter novel, due for publication on 16th of July in the UK, although the main plot details of the boy (teenager?) wizard’s new story – the Half-Blood Prince [...]

Artwork from Art Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Holocaust graphic novel Maus is being displayed on the underground system in Budapest according to the Comics Reporter. Culture Minister Andras Bozoki stated that Spiegelman’s groundbreaking work was important because it raised serious questions. It’s great to see a graphic novel work being taken so seriously, both politically and [...]

Apparently an episode of the brand-new Doctor Who series has been leaked onto the internet already, just a few weeks before transmission. The BBC say they don’t know ‘who’ was responsible, but we at FPI are putting our money squarely on the Master. And this seems as good a time as any to mention how [...]

Just found out via the news blog of the Alien Online that one of my favourite authors, Peter F Hamilton, has now handed in the finished manuscript to Judas Unchained, the sequel to the very fine Pandora’s Star (which is due in paperback this month). Running a little late, but since Peter has had a [...]
