A few weeks back we mentioned that the online Jack Kirby Museum was being prepared as both a tribute to one of comics’ most legendary and influential figures and a resource for readers to learn more about Jack. Well, I’m glad to say that the site has now gone live; it is early days and [...]

Journey in the SF Blogosphere

30. August 2005

Kameron Hurley is currently guest-blogging for one of the FPI blog’s faves, Jeff VanderMeer, who is (or so rumours tell us) trying to build a model of Ambergris using only meringue and cream instead of writing, but so far his Evil Monkey has eaten most of his attempts (at least, he blames the Evil Monkey). [...]

The winners have been announced for the 59th Edinburgh International Film Festival which closed last night. The bad news for SF fans is that Joss Whedon’s Serenity, which had been riding high in the daily polls for the Standard Life Audience Award (where those of us in the auditorium actually get to vote for eligible [...]

Well, as we begin the final weekend of this year’s Film Fest here in Edinburgh I can say it has been another stand-out year for bringing excellent and varied movies to Festival goers. We’ve had films from first-time directors and return visits from well-beloved auteurs, from micro-budget indies from home and overseas to mainstream French [...]

There are a whole slew of forthcoming titles to have a good browse through on the FPI Graphic Novels site this week: DC, Marvel and Image have all sent out their November lists and we’ve got them up and live for you. All three have good mixes; Marvel has Shanna the She Devil, volume 4 of [...]

The redoubtable Sandy Auden was at Worldcon and tracked down Neil Williamson and Andrew J Wilson, editors of the excellent Nova Scotia anthology (which also has a tale in it by yesterday’s interviewee, Hal Duncan). The Alien Online has the scoop.

In between consuming Bloody Marys, Glasgow-based Hal Duncan has been busy taking literary fiction, fantasy and mythology and then forcing them through a black hole to see what interesting new shapes come out. From some excellent short stories he has now arrived with a debut novel entitled Vellum which has been creating waves and [...]

Boldly going

You could have mistaken Edinburgh’s FPI branch on Southbridge for the Fringe headquarters of Starfleet Command on Monday afternoon, with the store filled with red, blue and gold uniforms of a very familiar design as we played host to a delightful Trek-themed signing event. As we mentioned a few posts back, the award-winning actress Bari Hochwald [...]

City of Saints and Madmen scribe Jeffy VanderMeer managed to get free of Evil Monkey long enough to go into more detail on the reasons behind some of his selections in his list of favourite graphic novels on the FPI GN site’s Recommended section – well worth a look. I’m sure some readers will be [...]

The Dark Horse graphic novels for December have just been posted on our pre-orders. As you’d expect from DH it is a nice mixture of titles, from Conan (with the fabulous P Craig Russell, no less) to Little Lulu, Star Wars to Samurai. And Romance. Oh yes, don’t forge the romance! Dark Horse are launching [...]

Nova Scotia revisited

I had the pleasure of attending a reading by some of the contributors in Mercat’s excellent new anthology of Scottish SF, Nova Scotia, last night in Edinburgh. It was a crowded audience there to see a great array of Scottish and Scottish-based writers and to enjoy listening to excerpts from what was our best-selling [...]

Smile Time

There aren’t many folk who could take their handsome, heroic leading man, turn him into a Sesame Street-style puppet and still have an incredibly cool slice of telefantasy on their hands. But when the show is Angel and the creator is Joss Whedon, these normal rules do not apply. The Smile Time episode was a huge [...]

In the excitement over the Hugo awards I totally missed several others, so please excuse the tardiness in bringing these to you. The multi-talented Warren Ellis won a gong from the Sidewise Awards for Alternative History for the terrific Ministry of Space from Image. The Prometheus Awards given by the Libertarian Futurist Society picked the outstanding [...]
