It is that time when magazines and TV shows look back and pick highlights from the year as it approaches its end. Well, we are no exception at FPI and we’ve started our Best of Year feature over on our new site. There are personal picks from staff members covering books, graphic novels and merchandise goodies, so if you are looking for Christmas gift ideas for the SF or comic fan in your life then why not have a browse at some of the items which took our fancy in 2005? We’re still adding more on, so it is worth coming back to check for more ideas.
And before anyone asks, I had to put my first three novels into an order, but really, on a different day I may have made different choices – it is always so hard to pick some top books because different writers mean more to you when you are in different moods. That said I hope I’ve managed a decent balance, from action heroine (Crash Deluxe) to incredibly imaginative fantasy (Vellum, City of Saints and Madmen). Ditto on my graphic novel choices – there is some serious action in there with Richard Morgan’s comics debut in Black Widow, classic all-ages comics in Dan Dare and more recent classic meterial being reprinted with Concrete and humour with the Complete Peanuts. We have also posted up in the same feature some of the top SF books and comic awards for this year to give you an idea of the works that had the comic and SF communities buzzing in 2005 (Hugos, Clarkes, Harveys, Eisners and more) – also another good place to look for inspiration when thinking about what to buy for Christmas for the Geek Who Has Everything.
