General

Howard Chaykin’s Bite Club has just hit the shelves in the last few days. A digest-sized graphic novel it collects the mini-series featuring the lives of Latino gangsters in Florida who just happen to be vampires.

When the head of the Del Toro family is whacked his will names his son as his successor, despite the fact he entered the priesthood; vampire priest with a secret sexual hang-up on his sister, pure Chaykin! Raging passions, family feuds, torrid affairs and violence ensue (all watched by the local Vampire Crime Unit of the police) – think the Godfather crossed with something more modern and hip like the Sopranos and throw in a dash of Miami Vice and some big fangs and you’re getting there.

Being Chaykin, it is of course, rather an adult title (yes, sex and violence are all in there in glorious colour, but you can probably guess that from the Frank Quitely saucy cover); it’s not his finest work, but it is a seriously fun, colourful and unusual crime romp which may appeal to folks who enjoyed the Vamps mini-series by Elaine Lee a few years back. The nice clear artwork is by David Hahn.
