The winners have been announced for the 59th Edinburgh International Film Festival which closed last night. The bad news for SF fans is that Joss Whedon’s Serenity, which had been riding high in the daily polls for the Standard Life Audience Award (where those of us in the auditorium actually get to vote for eligible movies) lost out at the end. South African gang dram Tsotsi slipped into first place at the end of last week, overtaking Serenity (which proved so popular the EIFF squeezed in extra screenings, but still they all sold out in minutes).
But don’t despair – Serenity and MirrorMask received great support and it is to the EIFF’s credit that they screened these films ahead of anyone else in the UK – great to see SF&F and horror films getting such support from one of Europe’s major film festivals.
