Awards, Film, TV and radio, News

The nominees for the 2006 Golden Globes have been announced. The awards, generally seen by movie insiders as a good indicator of how the Academy will vote on Oscar night, are lacking in SF&F entries this year, alas.

However Johnny Depp has a nomination for Best Performance By An Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, while King Kong, despite not actually being released yet, has managed to garner a nomination for Pete Jackson in Best Director category and James Newton Howard (who took over from Howard Shore recently) for Best Score (Chronicles of Narnia is also in this category). David Cronenberg’s adaptation of the graphic novel A History of Violence also grabbed a few noms for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Performance by an Actress (Drama) for Maria Bello.

On the television Globe nominees there are some genre entries: Lost is in the running for Best Television Series (Drama), Patricia Arquette is nominated in Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (Drama) for Medium, Matthew Fox in Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series (Drama) for Lost. It’s not the rampant genre triumphs of Return of the King, but at least there are some SF&F genre entries in there. The Golden Globes will be announced on January 16th at the Beverly Hills Hilton.
