Not long after the Eisner Awards shortlist was announced it’s the turn of one of the other prestigious comic book awards nominations to be announced, the Harvey Awards. The Harveys – this year marks the 18th annual awards – are awarded in numerous categories to honour excellence in comics and are nominated by professionals working in the industry. This year major players DC, home to comic icons such as Batman and Superman among many others, and the independent Fantagraphics (who publish the excellent R Crumb series) are clearly leading the pack with both the industry giant and the independent garnering large amounts of nominations.

Isn’t it great to see such a terrifically diverse range of titles, material, styles, publishers and creators represented here? proof positive of the varied and healthy nature of the comic genre right now. The awards, named for the late Harvey Kurtzman who was a founder of MAD magazine and in the course of his long and influential career worked with and nurtured such talents as Terry Gilliam, Gilbert Shelton and Robert Crumb. The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) in New York will host the 18th Harvey awards as part of their fourth annual MoCCA Arts Festival on June 11th. FPI wishes all of the talented folk nominated here who bring us the medium we love the very best.
