Industrial Light and Magic, the special effects wizards created by George Lucas for the original Star Wars movie, is 30 years old this year. Regardless of your feelings towards Star Wars and the proliferation of special effects in movies (the great Ray Bradbury was rather negative on digital effects in the new SFX) ILM re-wrote special effects history, effectively creating a new visual vocabulary under now legendary names like John Dykstra. Paula Parisi has a very good article on ILM’s 30th anniversary over on the Hollywood Reporter.
