General

The ultra-fab Joss Whedon has been back at the world of comics, this time in the esteemed company of some of his fellow writing team from Buffy and Angel. Dark Horse has collected together their Tales of the Vampires, a number of short stories linked together by having a captive vampire narrating them to school children training to be Watchers. It’s a good mix with a variety of different takes on the vampire theme – including an unusual one set during the 30s dustbowl of the Great Depression (Steinbeck meets Gothic horror?).

There are also a few Buffy-verse tales throughout the collection, featuring Angel, Spike and Dru, although the collection is wider than the normal characters. As a bonus for fans the brooding cover art is by none other than Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. This volume appeared a few weeks back, but some of you may have missed it (I did!) – a good read for vamp fans in general and Whedon admirers in particular.
