General

The lovely Sandra and John at Glasgow’s own Metaphrog have produced a lovely little two page special of Louis for the Big Issue’s Christmas special (the magazine sold by homeless vendors to help them back on their feet and off the street). Metaphrog have also posted the two page, colour strip up on their website here for us to all enjoy (although if you get the chance do buy the Big Issue special too and make it your Good Deed for the Day).

I love the Louis tales – they seem on first glance so deceptively simple, like little children’s picture book tales. For such simple-looking books they have hidden depths and dark undercurrents, the sort of mixture of innocence and menace, goodwill and exploitation of goodwill that often characterise the work of Edward Gorey or Tim Burton. More importantly they are also fun, beautiful to look at (and listen to if you have the last one, Dreams Never Die, which came with a CD of music by Mum and a very cool flash animation) and simply a charming little box of delights.
