General

The Glasgow-based Herald newspaper carried a fascinating piece about a real-life hero who later became a comic book hero. Private Jimmy Stokes won the highest honour, the Victoria Cross, during fierce fighting in the Netherlands. Despite being shot eight times he single-handedly captured seventeen German soldiers. His amazing feats were later immoratalised in the classic boy’s comic, the Victor. He has now been commemorated, along with other fallen comrades from the Gorbals area of Glasgow with a memorial in the form of a dying rose.
