Comics and cartoons

Yes, hard to believe but this year marks the tenth anniversary of Gary Spencer Millidge’s Strangehaven. I was first put onto Strangehaven by a good friend and was hooked right away. Strange goings-on in what looks like a peaceful, picture-postcard, rural English village – Strangehaven manages to combine elements of the Prisoner, Hammer House of Horror and perhaps even a tiny touch of Emmerdale! One of the things that struck me about it was that it is very different from many of the other comics and graphic novels on the market and it has a very British feel to it.

The first two volumes of Strangehaven are available now, while a third volume – Conspiracies (complete with an introduction by Dave Gibbons) – will be released this summer. Gary himself will be out tirelessly promoting Strangehaven and meeting the readers at a series of events in the UK, USA and Europe (full details on his website). Gary has also told us that Strangehaven is now to be published in Spain, following the success of the Italian editions – always great to see a damned good comic reaching new readers, good luck to him!

And if you don’t want to take my word for it, here’s what Alan Moore said of Strangehaven: “A darkly glittering example of the soap opera noir, Gary Spencer Millidge’s Strangehaven is an occasionally-opening portal into a beautifully realised otherworld, a plane all the more intriguing and sinister for its resemblance to our own mundane territories.”
