What the author says – Jeff VanderMeer

Books, Interviews

There are several new Science Fiction and Fantasy novels up on our new site this week, which you’ll see in the forthcoming third issue of the FPI magazine’s Book Picks section. Among those new titles are Black Juice, a collection by Margo Lanagan, one of the growing number of good Australian writers who UK publishers are picking up – Black Juice took not one but two awards at the recent World Fantasy convention, so it arrives here with an impressive pedigree already. Gollancz will published Black Juice in February and I have to say it set off my Bookseller Senses (a power you gain after a papercut caused by a radioactive novel) and I really think it is one to watch for.

Also in there is Shriek from good chum of the FPI blog, the multi-media Jeff VanderMeer Experience. Regular readers know I have recommended Jeff’s City of Saints and Madmen collection since it appeared in the Book Picks way back in March; it also proved a big success this month at the topic of the Edinburgh SF Book Group’s discussion. Shriek is a years-in-the-making full-length novel of Ambergris which I know I am far from alone in anticipating eagerly.

To whet your appetites further, Jeff sent me some text only today to add to the Shriek entry on the site as part of a feature we’re adding called What The Author Says. Which, simply, is a little addendum to the book’s entry on our site where the writer gets to add a few words about their work, giving a more personal little insight into the book. So Jeff has added his contribution today, which you can see on the Shriek entry, while others who have added some words include Marianne de Pierres, James Lovegrove and Deborah J Miller. Obviously we’ll be hoping more authors will add some of their own words as time goes on.
