Andrew Wilson, co-editor of the successful (and very tasty) Nova Scotia anthology, drops FPI a line to let us know that the Writer’s Bloc will be holding The Cabinet of Doctor Calamari this week. Edinburgh’s premiere spoken-word performance group will be in the Canon’s Gait, 232 Canongate – that’s the bottom end of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh near the Palace and Parliament (which is a different type of talking shop and not half as erudite).

“Saints, giants and demons on the Cornish coastline. Irish Americans hacking lumps out of soon to be demolished murder sites. Animal mummies sold as fertiliser.

Writer’s Bloc, Edinburgh’s premier spoken word performance group, offers a slew of new stories, prose poems and other strange brews from Doctor Calamari’s Cabinet. Come closer, but don’t inhale too deeply. After all, it’s Halloween, and strange spirits lurk in the basement of the Canon’s Gait…

Writers’ Bloc is a mix of professional writers and new voices. Several members have published novels in Britain and the USA. Others have placed stories in magazines and anthologies as diverse as Nova Scotia, Year’s Best Horror Stories, Scottish Book Collector, Interzone, Pinball Player, West Coast Magazine, Markings and Grunt And Groan: The New Anthology of Sex At Work.”

Kick-off is at 8pm so get there in time to get your drinks and settle down for some literary feats on Thursday 24th October. Tickets are £2 (£1 concessions) and you can check out further details on the Writer’s Bloc site.
