50 greatest cartoons

Via Boing Boing comes this link to CityRag which has taken a list of the top 50 cartoons as voted for by the animation industry in the 90s and then found links to all of them online. Topping the list is the Bugs Bunny classic “What’s Opera, Doc?”, which combines some amazing animation (the simple, stark colour washes over Elmer as he descends the staircase are amazing) with perfectly timed music to re-create Wagner’s Ring Cycle in a few minutes (I’m not arguing, I’d rate that as the best cartoon of all time too).

Also in there is Winsor McCay’s amazingly early animation Gertie the Dinosaur, another musical masterpiece from Bugs and Co with the Rabbit of Seville, Duck Dodgers in the 24 & 1/2 Century, Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor, Donald Duck in Der Fuehrer’s Face (strangely one not seen much today!) and a whole bunch of amazing animations for you to go delight yourselves with. Nice one.
