Jonathan reports that the Australian Science Fiction Awards – more normally referred to as the Ditmars – have opened this year’s nominations process. The 2006 awards will be presented at Conjure on April 15th, while the nominations process closes on February 17th. Why should readers in the UK or US be bothered about this? Well because, like the UK the current scene in Oz is not only alive and kicking but producing some damned fine and innovative new writing that you are going to want to read.

Publishers in other nations are not slow on the uptake and as well as exporting some of our best new writers we’re seeing more Australian writers being published here in the UK – next month sees the arrival of one Australian collection of speculative fiction from Gollancz that I am eager to get my hands on, Margo Lanagan’s award-winning Black Juice. Margo is the latest author to contribute some text to the What The Author Says feature on our books section and you can read what she said about Black Juice here.
