Director Bryan Singer was delighted with the huge turn-out of fans for the London premiere of Superman Returns in Leicester Square yesterday, commenting that there were more fans there than there had been even for his X-Men premieres. Asked about a sequel to the movie which has topped the US box office though, Singer replied that right now he really needed a holiday.
The BBC has a piece on original Superman director Richard Donner; in a very nice touch Donner praises Singer and his cast and crew’s resurrection of Superman. He appreciated the way in which Singer has managed to balance the spectacular effects with the emotional core of the film, focussing on Lois and Clark/Superman’s relationship. Watching Brandon Routh’s performance brought back memories of the late Chris Reeve for the director, but he was still full of praise for his successor:
“Christopher Reeve established something that is and will always be unique, but there is a new young man out there who’s a bit of a genius. He’s done a beautiful job… Routh is wonderful. He’s brought his own identity to the role, and he is Superman.”
The movie is on general release as of today in the UK and I can tell you all, you are in for a real treat, you are going to love it. I will be discussing the movie on BBC Scotland’s Radio Café programme this afternoon, between 1.25 and 2pm.
