An article in the Sydney Morning Herald reports on a study by Cambridge history don Doctor Richard Toye where he claims that not only was Winston Churchill a secret SF fan, several of the famous orator’s speeches were drawn from the writings of H G Wells, with the two men corresponding regularly until Wells’ death. Churchill’s use of phrases from Wells’ famous SF works is “a bit like Tony Blair using phrases from Star Trek or Doctor Who,” Dr Toye remarked. Hmmm, I think on that theme Tony obviously isn’t familiar with the Federation doctrine of non-interference in other cultures…
