Comics and cartoons, News

Fancy a comics sandwhich? No, I’m not talking about popping the latest Civil War issue between a pair of 52s. How about a sandwich shop themed around a comic? Business Week carries a story about Dagwood’s Sandwich Shoppe in Florida, liberally decorated with work from the long-running cartoon strip Blondie, created back in the 30s by Chic Young. His son Dean Young, who carried on the strip after his father’s death, is a partner, not just in supplying art and design but actually working with the chef – their crowning glory (a massive 1 & 1/2 pound monster which even Scooby and Shaggy might think twice about) is named the Dagwood in honour of the character and naturally the artwork is everywhere, even in the toilets.

According to the article the Blondie strip is still published in around 55 countries, quite a success for the sandwich shop to live up to. I quite like the idea of a theme with my lunch – personally I have always been disappointed that Subway sandwich shops don’t feature Christopher Lambert in a tuxedo (there’s a nice obscure reference for the morning). I wonder if any other comic strips would be suitable for this idea? I can just imagine a chain of Oor Wullie themed restaurants in Scotland serving up piping hot stovies…

Surely Oor Wullie restaurants would serve the wee fella’s favourite dish, mince and tatties (potatoes, for those who don’t understand Scots)
