This was one of the more interesting yet troubling graphic novels we added to our site recently. Dragon Slippers sounds like a gentle fantasy tale, but the subtitle This Is What An Abusive Relationship Looks Like belies that image. Created by Rosalind Penfold, it tells of how a bright, successful career woman met the man of her dreams, little knowing what nightmares lay ahead once they were married.
It is very strong stuff, but given how often this awful subject is kept behind closed doors she is to be commended for not only facing her fears but getting them out where they can be discussed. Rosalind is interviewed here in the Daily Telegraph; as I say it is a strong subject and not suitable for everyone, but given the audience for works by creators like Sacco or Satrapi I’m sure there will be an audience for this brave work.
