October’s meeting (which covered Michel Faber’s excellent Under the Skin) will be a hard act to follow, but for November the Book Group has the latest novel from one of the UK’s sharpest SF writers and a good friend of the blog, James Lovegrove. The book will be Provender Gleed, set in a Britain slightly different from ours, where most power here and in the rest of the world is held by the Families, following an alliance centuries before between the Medicis and the Borgias. The book offers a good kidnapping mystery along with some nice (and often satirical) takes on the inequalities of society, the modern obsession with celebrities and showcases James’ astonishing word-skill with the appearance of the Anagrammatic Detectives. The meeting will be on Tuesday 28th of November at the usual time of 6pm in Henderson’s on Hanover Street. The group discusses SF, Fantasy, Horror and Graphic Novels chosen by the members, with books varying from the Sandman to Margaret Atwood and Alfred Bester; all are welcome to come along and join in; James’ official website can be found here.
