I received information on a very interesting cartoon book today from Edinburgh’s Mercat Press (who brought us one of last year’s hits, the SF anthology Nova Scotia). The book is called Fizzers, derived from the Glaswegian colloquialism for face, and is a collection of cartoon caricatures of famous Scots by the Glasgow-based Scottish Cartoon Art Studio, with subjects ranging from Ewan McGregor and Sir Sean Connery to J K Rowling.
It looks like a very enjoyable cartoon collection and for those in, or visiting Edinburgh there will be a chance to see the pictures full-scale at an exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery where the collective’s cartoon caricatures will add a somewhat alternative bent to the more conservative and traditional portraits patrons normally view in that august, red sandstone building. Fizzers is due in April, while the exhibition is scheduled to run from Friday 7th April to Sunday 2nd July. I think I’ll need to pay a visit as well as get the book – besides how often do you get to see good cartoon work in a major national gallery?
