Books, Conventions and events

To celebrate what would have been the 150th birthday of L. Frank Baum the Foley Centre Library at Gonzaga University is hosting an exhibition exploring the wonderful world of Oz. Oz and Beyond: Highlights from the L. Frank Baum Collection of Currie Corbin in the rare book room showcases a range of material, from the famous movie through stage plays and, of course, the books which began it all. The article by the LA Times rightly points out that Baum’s delightful world was far bigger than many think today as it expanded through a number of other books which he wrote and indeed later there were officially licensed books written by other authors. Even today it continues with graphic novels such as Dorothy and Adventures in Oz continuing to explore Baum’s magical realm.

“The Wizard of Oz” was America’s first fairy tale. Baum really was America’s Hans Christian Andersen.” Frank J. Evina, curator of the Library of Congress’ Oz exhibit in 2000.
