Teri Hatcher will voice both the mother of Coraline (voiced by Dakota Fanning, as reported here earlier) and the Other Mother in the strange, parallel world Coraline finds when she goes through a mysterious door in her new home. The animated adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s delightfully dark younger reader’s tale (which will appeal to Edward Gorey readers) is being produced by Laika Entertainment with Henry Selick directing.
In other Gaiman-related movie news, Neil and long-time friend and collaborator Dave McKean’s fantastic (in all sense of the word) MirrorMask is finally about to be released to eager viewers on DVD in the UK. And about time too – I loved it when I saw it last summer during the Edinburgh International Film Festival and I’ve been dying to watch it again. Neil observed on his online journal a while back that the studio had complained it was one of the most common movies to be illegally downloaded via the web this year but perhaps that should send a message to the studios to try serving audience demand properly? Anyway, I’m keen to get my paws on MirrorMask at last; it really did look like one of Dave’s exquisite pages of art come to life.
