Comics and cartoons

Dynamite Entertainment has released details for the first graphic novel collection of their New Battlestar Galactica comics. Filling in gaps between the episodes of the hit series (which has recently begun airing its third season in the US) the comics have been going down well with fans hungry for more of the characters. I will freely admit I have an ambivalent attitude to comics based on TV shows and films; yes, I plead guilty to enjoying some of the 80s Star Trek and Next Generation comics from DC and some of the Xena titles, but, being a cynical bookseller, I’m increasingly wary of TV and movie tie-in comics (and books).

That said the Galactica series has been approached with some respect by Dynamite who seem to be avoiding the easy trap of just pumping out anything with a popular show’s logo on it in the belief fans will buy it. Nope, they seem to be looking properly at elements of the new show which have made it so popular and talked about (hands up, I love the show) and are trying to infuse the comics with a similar ethos. The first volume of the New Battlestar Galactica series is being treated to a hardback edition (with a choice of covers) and is due to be published in April. I think I may put aside my usual, trademark cynicism (all booksellers are infused with it) and have a look a this.
