Artist Bernard Chang dropped me a line today about his latest book, the imminent How to Make Money Like a Porn Star from Reagan Books in the US. As Bernard notes, Reagan is part of a large publishing group but graphic novels are something a bit new to them, so he is keen to let readers know about the book, which is written by Neill Strauss (who also did the hit book The Game from Edinburgh publishers Canongate earlier this year).
Bernard tells me that “the book is a dark, comedic satire of the porn industry, taken from Neil’s observations while he was writing the Jenna Jameson autobiography “How to Make Love Like a Porn Star” (which was rather interesting, although I only checked it out for professional reasons of course – Joe). It is the story of fictitious porn queen, Claudia Corvette, who’s kidnapped on her way to settle a score with porn rival, Giselle Viper (all the porn stars have the first names of supermodels and the last names of sports cars.)
There are also art cameos by fellow comics pros: Sean Chen (X-Men the End, Wolverine, Iron Man), John Paul Leon (the Winter Men, Earth X, Challengers of the Unknown), Gregg Schigiel (Mini Marvel, Spongebob Squarepants), and Hollywood story-boarder Mark Moretti (I, Robot, Talladega Nights, Final Fantasy). Everything down to the fine print in the (fake) ads and magazine articles go towards building the world in which Claudia lives.”
Bernard and Neill’s How to Make Money Like a Porn Star should be hitting the shelves within the next week or two and has already picked up some positive comments from Kirkus magazine. You can find out more about this and other works by Bernard on his official site.
