Marvel Entertainment and Paramount announced that the Iron Man movie is scheduled for a release in the summer of 2008 (so, Fantastic Four last summer, X-Men now, Spidey 3 next summer, then Iron Man – anyone see a pattern here?). Rumour has it that a villain will be announced at the big San Diego Comic-Con at the end of July. The official description sums up the film thus:
“Based upon Marvel’s iconic Super Hero, the film will follow billionaire weapons-manufacturer, Tony Stark, who confronts the sins of his past after he is injured by one of his own weapons. Equipped with a high-tech suit of armor, he becomes Iron Man to combat evil on a global scale.”
Sticking with metal-head, we have a superb-looking Iron Man bust coming out this autumn. Limited to 5,000 pieces the sculpture is based on Iron Man artwork by the great Alex Ross, so you know it is going to be popular.
Autumn also sees the paperback edition of Ultimate Iron Man by the award-winning SF author Orson Scott Card as part of Marvel’s September pre-order titles. Other titles in the September Marvel list include volume 6 of the Daredevil hardback collection (superb), Essential Thor volume 3, Thor: the Eternals Saga Volume 1 (good timing since Neil Gaiman’s new Eternals is doing so well in comic form) and the first volume of the re-booted 70s character Ms Marvel (good stuff and a great companion to other recently rebooted superheroines like Supergirl and Powergirl – actually looking at the cover art I think she must use the same leg exercising machine as Powergirl. The book is damned clever though, using her lack of fame as a hero as an actual plot device in the comic).
There is also something of a horror theme to September’s Marvel titles, with X-Men: Apocalypse/Dracula, Essential Tales of the Zombie Volume 1 and some American-style Gothic with Haunt of Horror: Edgar Allan Poe – please feel free to join me in a chorus of ‘nevermore’.
