The Beat carries news of the Scream Awards given out by Stateside channel Spike TV, which had a fair old bit of comics and comics-related content. Those who charge the medium with pandering too much to male fantasy fulfilment and borderline misogyny may not wish to read any further:
The ultimate scream: “Batman Begins”
Best sci-fi movie: “V for Vendetta”
Best superhero: Brandon Routh as Superman, “Superman Returns”
Sexiest superhero: Jessica Alba as “the Invisible Woman,” “Fantastic Four”
Best comic-to-screen adaptation: “Army of Darkness”
Best director: Christopher Nolan, “Batman Begins”
Best screamplay: “Batman Begins,” written by David S. Goyer & Christopher Nolan
Best flesh scene: Famke Janssen & Hugh Jackman, “X-Men: the Last Stand”
Best comic book: Marvel Zombies
Best screen-to-comic adaptation: “X-Men: the Last Stand”
Best rack on the rack: “Vampirella”
Best comic book writer: Frank Miller, “Batman & Robin”
Best comic book artist: Sean Phillips, Marvel Zombies
Best internet parody: “How Superman Should Have Ended,” how it should have ended.com
Most shocking comic book twist: Peter Parker reveals that he’s Spider-Man, “Civil War”
Comic-con icon award: Frank Miller
Hmmm, I’m not sure the ‘shocking comic book twist’ was much of a twist since it was famously trumpeted all over the web before the actual issue came out; perhaps that award should have been re-named ‘biggest plot spoiler gaffe’? And the word is that the unfeasibly (even for comics) proportioned Power Girl has been saying the ‘best rack on the rack’ award was fixed. Perhaps the girls should have their own ‘best buns in tights’ awards to redress the sexist balance a bit? Any nominations, ladies?
