Via John at Down The Tubes who spotted this before I did (thanks, John) comes some good news for Torchwood fans: “Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood has been commissioned for a second series and will premiere on BBC2 instead of BBC3.
Speaking at the BBC2 winter/spring launch, channel controller Roly Keating said the new series would begin filming in spring and is likely to air in the autumn. Although it has not been confirmed, the BBC Wales production is likely to be repeated on BBC3.
The science fiction drama, written by Russell T Davis, proved to be an unqualified hit on BBC3 this year. The first episode on 22 October at 9pm attracted 2.4 million multichannel homes (12.5%), the fourth highest audience of any multichannel programme ever.”
There, isn’t that a nice little Xmas present from the BB of C for Who and Torchwood fans? I’ve really been enjoying this first season so far (although last weekend’s geek ghost tale was a dreadful clunker, I thought, pointless, dull and violated it’s own story logic at the end). I don’t think Torchwood is brilliant – yet. It hasn’t achieved that Battlestar Galactica-like level of essential, gripping viewing quite yet, but it has been only a few episodes so far and with the exception of last week’s I’ve not only enjoyed them so far, I can see the series and the characters building up in such a way that bodes very well for this newly announced second series.
