John at the revamped Down The Tubes put me on to this intriguing online graphic novel, Shades, from Broken Voice Comics. Starting with a break-in at the British Museum and the kidnapping of a seemingly ordinary old tailor who may – or may not – have worked for superheroes it seems fits somewhere between Albion and the League of Extraodinary Gentlemen. Shades is written by David A J Berner and illustrated by Harsho Mohan Chattoraj; it follows a group of heroes in late 20th century Britain, a country still obsessed by the loss of Empire. John was announcing the fourth chapter of Shades going up; since it is new to me I’m going to have to catch up to that point, but luckily all of it is available on the Broken Voices site (along with some other choice webcomics). The first couple of chapters certainly have me very interested and I’m going to have to read through the lot.

[...] You might remember I mentioned Shades a while back here on the blog after John at Down The Tubes put me on to it. I was most impressed – it had a terrific vibe as we followed a retired tailor who may – or may not – have been involved with superhumans and a mysterious theft at the British Museum; the whole thing had a kind of Albion meets League of Extraordinary Gentlemen feel to it, so I am delighted to see a new chapter going up. Do yourself a favour and check it out; you’re going to enjoy it and you’ll be supporting our small press talent at the same time. I really like the way this is shaping up – let’s hope there is a print version to follow. [...]
