I’m going to coat-tail on what “Very Evolved” said… The way you connect to your audience is… Know who you are writing to. You need to pick a Target Audience and stick to them. You wouldn’t write to an audience of 14yr olds the same way you would write to an audience of 60yr olds.

[...] Top author Jeff VanderMeer has posted his latest graphic novel reviews on Bookslut, along with some links to various best of the year posts (including the one we had here in December - thanks, Jeff!). He also sets up a primer of sorts for a discussion of the way graphic novels are perceived and judged in relation to prose novels (and since Jeff is not only a writer but a keen promoter of both good novels and comics he is trying to approach it in a balanced manner, so please, no flaming emails or comments!). Jeff is planning to expand on the issues in later Bookslut columns, but for the moment here are the question he asks as a good kickstart to get people thinking more about it (meantime a shameless plug - the paperback of Jeff’s Shriek is out this month in the UK; if you don’t buy it people will think you are an illiterate boor): [...]

I'm a really big fan of Ian Edgington's work on the whole, but I have to say that 'Leviathan' was just way, way too close for comfort (albeit with added demonology) to the central premise of James Lovegrove's debut novel 'The Hope'...
