I missed this until SF blog Big Dumb Object mentioned it: the upcoming Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood is getting the ‘movie-style’ premiere treatment ahead of the initial episode airing, with HD screenings in cinemas in London, Manchester, Cardiff and Glasgow on Wednesday 18th of October. There is a competition running in conjunction with BBC digital station Radio 7 to win tickets to the screening with details on the Torchwood blog.
On a related theme the BBC’s new Robin Hood series debuted at the weekend in the same Saturday 7pm time slot the revamped Doctor Who has been so successful in; according to the Beeb website the show did quite well with viewers of over 8 million (a bit short of Who’s debut in the slot, but still very good, beating the Ant and Dec, which can’t be a bad thing surely). I’m reserving judgement – I thought it was enjoyable, but it failed to grab me, so I will give it a few episodes to see if it grows on me. And was it just me or were there overtones to the current conflict in Iraq when Robin makes pronouncements about the Crusades and fighting for a powerful leader’s (in this case the Pope) agenda instead of a real cause?
