The BBC has announced the lead female actor for the new Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood. Welsh actress Eve Myles will play a character called Gwen alongside the new fan favourite John Barrowman who returns to the popular character of Captain Jack. The new show, aimed at a more late-night, mature audience is again being driven by Who supermo Russell T Davies (repeating his normal schtick of casting someone he has previously worked with as Eve appeared in 2004′s new Who) but apparently there will be no crossover.

The series, set on Earth, has a group of investigators who look into human and alien mysteries – which frankly doesn’t sound terribly novel or exciting which, coupled with the fact that it is a spin-off rings alarm bells in my head… Except for the fact Davies is involved, so I suspect it may turn out to be more than the sum of its parts. Filming should take place over the summer and hopefully the first of the 13 episodes will air before the end of the year in the UK.
