Conventions and events, News

The Alien Online draws my attention to an interesting-sounding art exhibition which takes the theme of England during the events in Wynhdham’s classic Day of the Triffids (hopefully without adding in TV gardner Alan Titchmarsh battling the errant plants). The work is by Christopher Campbell and is currently running in Start Space in sunny Shoredtich until June 11th.

Good news!! – The exhibition does not portray Triffids or even Alan Titchmarsh battling against them. According to Michael Glover, who has reviewed this exhibition published in The Independent (19/05/06), ‘the paintings are not at all the stuff of horror movies, though. There is not an alien in sight. Nor there is a suffering or horror-struck human being. In Campbell’s deserted paintings the character of things – tres, buildings, cars – is made alien. Campbell works with light, turning it up, toning it down, in almost all the paintings. Light enables things to flare, alarmingly, and to flourish. It also oppresses, crushes, muffles, clogs. Who needs needs Triffids when all this is going on?’
