You’ve probably noticed me remarking form time to time how the French treat the comics/sequential arts genre with far more respect than the medium is usually accorded in English-language countries (outside the comics community I mean). Well Matthew Badham at Bugpowder (thanks, Matt) passed on this cool bit of news about a new title Anthologie de BDs Britanniques Contemporaines.
Yes, our Gallic comics colleagues have a collection of some damned cool British Indy creators coming out, including Sean Azzopardi and Richard Cowdry. Here we are, celebrating British comics goodness all month long and bringing you some brilliant independent British talent while across the Channel our comics cousins are reading those self-same folks en Francais. C’est formidable, n’est pas?

We may be a bit biased of course, but we reckon comics have to be one of the best international mediums around; unlike an English translation of a foreign novel for instance, translated comics still retain the original artwork which helps the context of the translation and retains much of the creator’s intent and style. Increasing numbers of anthologies and publishers are picking up on the incredible talent just begging for attention from overseas artists and, as we noted here last week, this traffic goes both ways as we heard of some of our British small press creators being collected for a French anthology.
