Whedon on Buffy ‘season 8′

Entertainment Weekly has an interview with the god-like Joss Whedon, discussing the new Buffy comic due from Dark Horse in the spring of 2007. As reported some time back this will be an official continuation of the existing Buffy series, leading on from the final TV season, being in effect an eighth season, with Joss handling the projected 25 to 30 issue run like a TV production, with him writing the first few episodes then overseeing a group of other writers for the remainder:

”We’re calling it season 8 and we’re picking up almost right after season seven left off. I don’t know exactly why it or how it happened. I just thought, ‘Oh, I could do that! It would be fun!’ It happens to me every now and then, and causes me to commit to things I really don’t have time for.”

Buffy fans, you may start getting your hopes up now, not just because we are going to get another fix of Buffyness but because Joss has turned into as good a comics creator as he has a TV and film creator, so this should be damned good. Characters from Angel will not feature too heavily due to IDW now running a new (and highly enjoyable) Angel series (check out Spike versus Dracula, great fun!) and the new Buffy series will not address the cliffhanger at the end of the final episode of Angel (oh well, can’t have everything). Joss also talks a little about the Wonder Woman movie, noting that he probably should have taken some time off before tackling it, but he is “plugging away” on it, hampered by the lack of a iconic comics tale that suits her perfectly for film (unlike Batman, he observes, who has a massive stock of major stories and characters to draw upon). I am sure Joss will work through it and give us an Amazonian we will love.

Meanwhile, back here in Blighty, the new SFX is about to hit the shelves and look who is in there too – why, it’s Joss Whedon again! The SFX crew sit down not only with Joss Whedon but also Bryan Hitch, Warren Ellis and comedian Natalie Haynes talking comics and films over drinks – Warren Ellis has some photos posted up.
