Tom Spurgeon’s Comics Reporter is a site several of us here read daily and one that should be bookmarked by anyone interested in the ninth art. He offers up news, pertinent links, regular interviews and analysis of mainstream underground and non English-language comics work, always presented in an accessible, informed and intelligent manner. This applies to the all-but-inevitable Christmas ‘best of’ type lists: Tom has posted up his ‘Black Friday Holiday Shopping Guide‘ for the year and it is a humungous undertaking. No, seriously, the darned thing is huge – 171 suggestions for comics, graphic novels, comics-related merchandise and artwork in one huge cut-out-and-keep guide. If you regularly read CR then you will no doubt expect that Tom would show his good taste in picking out some excellent works, from underground mini-comics you may never have heard of to mainstream releases, and you would be right, he does, but he also throws in links to places to pick up all sorts of original artwork, graphic novels for different ages, genders, for… Well, just go and read it!
If you’re looking for some ideas for the comics person in your life this Christmas or just looking to see if there is something interesting you perhaps missed for yourself you’re likely to find a number of works in the list that appeal. I’ve read a number on there, several have cropped up on the blog from time to time and yet there are so many I haven’t and again I find myself wishing I had the time to just sit and read every single one I wanted to. So many good comics and books…
