Arab cartoons – anti-Semitic?

Comics and cartoons

Middle East News carries a report that the recent violent in-fighting between different groups in the Gaza Strip has led to a number of cartoons in the Arab press which could be considered anti-Semitic and appear to be blaming the Palestinian in-fighting on Israel. There certainly are some in the article which would appear to support the claim of anti-Semitism, such as one employing a caricature of an Orthodox Jew which has some disturbing similarities to the crude racial propaganda of Goebbels, but others, such as this one from Bahrain’s Akhbar al-Khalij newspaper (below) showing an American arm wielding an Israeli hammer which splits a Palestinian head in two looks more to me to be making a legitimate comment about the responsibility the international community shares for the tensions which sparked the recent violent cycle (and while the fighting may be between elements in Gaza Israel, America and Europe can’t really pretend their actions haven’t had some influence or effect either). Either way it looks like cartoons continue to be on the front line.

What a silly, offensive post. Hamas terrorists kill Fatah terrorists, and there are always “useful idiots” in the West to blame this on America, Israel, or the West. For shame.

Why do you think it is offensive to discuss events and consider the fact that there are a number of factors both internal and external to the situation?

[...] The Middle East Research Institute (MEMRI) site has gathered together a range of reactions to the recent in-fighting between Fatah and Hamas in Gaza from the Arab press; a few at the end are similar in tone to the ones mentioned last week which laid some responsibility also with external forces (some were also possibly anti-Semitic), but most lampoon both groups mercilessly for the death they have cause while both supposedly are meant to be trying to achieve the same aim.
