Comics and cartoons

Dan Goldman has put up his 24 Hour Comic Day work on his website: ‘Before you were here‘. Its a beautiful little story of a man trying to fill the aching void in his life (his ravenous ‘volcano’) with meaningless flings, drink and drugs until he finds what it is he needs in his life, something wonderful and scary at the same time.

The art, on one level, is much simpler than much of Dan’s usual work, as you might expect with it being produced to the 24-hour deadline, but is has a lovely simplicity to it which suits the story well (in a couple of spots it made me think of art from a children’s picture book mashed up with some old 60s UPA cartoon styles). Despite the relative simplicity of the drawings though, Dan has still somehow (how???) managed to find time in those 24 hours to add in a touch of his distinctive colouring; not quite as psychedelic as Kelly but still damned impressive for something created to such a deadline – go and check it out.
