Big Brother is Watching You

I know several comics sites discussed the rather cool Hey, Oscar Wilde! It’s Clobbering Time! site (where different artists create interpretations of famous literary works and characters) recently, but since I was off I missed most that. But I can’t resist belatedly chipping in with the entry by Chris Weston that Alex from Culpable y Perdedor drew my attention to:

Chris Weston Big Brother Hey Oscar.jpg

(Chris Weston’s take on Orwell’s Big Brother from 1984)

And why couldn’t I resist throwing in my tuppence worth? Well, because it is such a damned good bit of comic art – take away the ‘Big Brother is Watching’ text and I would still have taken one look at this and thought George Orwell, 1984, because Chris captured the feel of it so well. And even if he hadn’t explained on his blog that he opted to make Big Brother a fusion of Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Lord Kitchner’s propaganda images I’d have clocked that too – in fact, looking at the picture before reading the text below it I did realise right away what he had done. And for both of those qualities of capturing the essence of part of the book and for that clever appropriation of 20th century dictatorial propaganda I can’t resist posting on it and also directing any of you who haven’t seen it yet to the Hey, Oscar site – you will want to bookmark that one.
