Rejoice, my fellow geeks! The BBC has confirmed that Billie Piper is to return as Rose Tyler for three episodes of the next season of Doctor Who, currently filming in Cardiff as we speak. There are precious few details at the moment, other than the fact that Rose returns (despite being in a sealed alternate reality), although I’m sure we’ll see that regular (and rather clever from a publicity point of view) drip-feed of news tidbits from the Who office over coming months, as they’ve done in the lead-up to previous seasons to get us all excited (it works).

As the BBC article notes, this means next season will see no less than three companions for our favourite Time Lord, with Freema Agyeman’s Martha re-appearing at some point in the season (and also in Who spin-off Torchwood) and the controversial choice of Catherine Tate’s Donna. But for right now simply rejoice in the news that Billie is back! Comets fall from the sky and the ill are healed! Oh yes, I am excited… Billie will also be making a second appearance in a TV adaptation of excellent author Philip Pullman’s work, this time The Shadow in the North, as part of the BBC’s Christmas line-up.

There are only a very few ways they could make this work well and a whole lot more ways this could go wrong. I’m hoping for the best with Rose’s return.
I wrote more thoughts about this on my blog too that you’re welcome to check out if you like.
