Comics and cartoons

The BBC’s news site has a selection of political cartoons covering Britain’s often schizophrenic relationship with, and attitude to, the European Union. The cartoons cover several decades and include cartoons by regular cartoonists in the Britiish media such as Chris Riddell, Matt, Garland and, of course, the terrific Steve Bell, who created this cartoon (below) for the Guardian commenting on Tony Blair’s supposed crusade to win more UK citizens over to the EU after a very low turnout for European elections – Blair as Marie, spirit of the French Revolution is an especially nice touch, considering several decades ago the French government blocked the original UK application to join the Union.

The cartoons are drawn (sorry, bad pun) from a selection taken from the exhibition currently running at the Cartoon Museum in London. The new exhibition which opened today boasts some 90 cartoons by 30 artists from David Low to Ralph Steadman and runs until January 20th – check the site for full details.
