I missed the other night, but Ariel caught it at the UK SF Book News site: the shortlist for the British Fantasy Awards have been announced – in the novel category we have:
Chaz Brenchley, Bridge of Dreams, Ace Books
Mike Carey, The Devil You Know, Orbit Books
Mark Chadbourn, Jack of Ravens: Kingdom of the Serpent 1, Gollancz
M. John Harrison, Nova Swing, Gollancz
Tim Lebbon, Dusk, Spectra
Scott Lynch, The Lies of Locke Lamora, Gollancz
Sarah Pinborough, Breeding Ground, Leisure Books
Mark Samuels, The Face of Twilight, PS Publishing
Conrad Williams, The Unblemished, Earthling Publications
The awards also take in novellas, short stories, anthologies, small press, non-fiction (see the BFS for full details) and also art, with John Picacio making yet another awards shortlist appearance – he’s already on the shortlist for the prestigious Hugo Awards for Cover Story. Sad to say I have only managed to read four of the shortlisted novels (come on though, even I can’t read everything) but all four were quite excellent and deserve their place on the list; I’m especially happy to see top comics scribe Mike Carey’s first foray into prose novels, The Devil You Know, being nominated (can’t wait for the next volume in that series this autumn) and also glad to see Tim Lebbon picking up a nod for Dusk, despite it not having a UK mainstream publisher (why not? Exceptionally disturbing dark fantasy, I loved it). The awards winners will be announced at Fantasycon on the 23rd of September.
