Caricatures of religious sensitivity

In the Courier International Joachim Tornau has a brief piece about visiting the Caricatura exhibition in Kassel, Germany, which now has over 650 works by 80 cartoonists. Tornau describes the exhibition as an “inventory of injured sensitivities”, with works including Klaus Stuttmann‘s cartoons which depicted the Iranian football team as suicide bombers and satirising German armed forces being deployed to the match (earning the artist threats for his trouble – nothing like an open and frank exchange of ideas, is there?).

(the offending football cartoon, (C) Klaus Stuttman; his site has a good archive which allows searching by topic and date)

In fact he goes on to point out that with the wave of criticism of cartoons for being insensitive or attacking deeply held beliefs/people who can’t tolerate alternative viewpoints (delete as you believe fit) the museum has decided to dedicate an entire section to cartoons which have fallen foul of cries for censorship (or worse), including displaying the twelve Danish cartoons of the Prophet. I’m sure someone, somewhere will be outraged that we even mention that there is such an exhibition… The fifth Caricatura runs until the 23rd of September. (link via Marko at Neorama)
