Chad Varah obituary

Books, Comics and cartoons

Sad to say I completely missed this story, but Tom at Comics Reporter pointed out that the always worth reading Steve Holland had posted up a very good obituary of the late Chad Varah, who passed away earlier in November aged 95. Chad was a clergyman and is also (rightly) well-remembered for founding the Samaritans (I’m moved to wonder how many people that has helped or even saved over the decades); Chad was also a serious contributor to British comics, not least that landmark of Brit comics culture, the Eagle, working on a number of articles and strips, including the iconic Dan Dare (still one of my favourite comics characters of all time).

Reading down Steve’s Bear Alley I was also saddened to see a second tribute to a recently deceased writer, this time Peter Haining, who will be more than familiar to legions of readers, not least for his vast number of anthologies, quite a few of which have lined my own bookshelves for many years and which were often the first exposure I had to some writers I would then go out to find more of (thank you for that, Peter). Peter passed away last week after a sudden heart attack at the age of 67, not exactly old by today’s standards. Steve knew Peter personally and has written a tribute to his friend as well as reproducing an interview with him from 1995.

This is Arsenal’s charity of the year supporting autistic children, Peter having an autistic son and grandson. Please wear dark suits but loud shirts!” (Via the indispensable Dave Langford’s Ansible)     Print this Story    Send to a Friend [...]
