The first meeting of Coffee and Comics, the graphic novel offshoot of the more established Edinburgh SF Book Group which I’ve been involved with for years, took place this week and was, I’m pleased to say, pretty successful. We were discussing Brian K Vaughan and Niko Henrichon’s Pride of Baghdad, chosen partly because it is such a damned good book but partly because it is a pretty accessible work for anyone who isn’t overly familiar with comics to get into. The folk who came along seemed keen to continue so co-founder Chris and I talked to them about some possible comics for a second meeting and the consensus was to have a look at Art Spiegelman’s Maus (again a work which won’t be too hard for non-comics readers to tackle).
The next meeting will be on Tuesday 13th of February from 6 to 7pm in the Biblos cafe-bar on the corner of Chambers Street and Southbridge in Edinburgh’s Old Town, near to the Edinburgh FPI. The next meeting of the SF book group will be on Tuesday 30th of January from 6 to 7pm in Henderson’s on Hanover Street, where the book under discussion will be Robert Heinlein’s manula on how to tackle a serious bug problem, Starship Troopers – details on the blog. All welcome to come along and discuss some good books and comics.
