Snoopy begins his World War I flying ace period; this was genius when I was a kid and first read it in cheap little paperback collections. It was genius when I re-read them in my teens. And in my twenties. And it is still bloody genius now I’m a mature, sophisticated adult of indeterminate age (ahem). Charles Schulz – how many of us grew up reading his wonderful cartoons? I could talk about Schulz’s influence on other cartoonists, his subtext commenting on life in America or go all postmodern, but really the most important things to say about his Peanuts work is quite simply that is is brilliant, touching and above all very, very funny. All this with a few little lines of ink…
