According to new Doctor Who companion Catherine Tate the next season could well be David Tennant’s final season in the role; speaking to Jonathan Ross on BBC Radio 2 she remarked “I think it’s maybe David’s last series.” The BBC hasn’t commented on the veracity or falseness of this claim, which is bound to stir the rumour mill into action again (just wait for the tabloids to confidently announce a range of actors as the definite shoe-in for the part after Tennant leaves).

Which might be the idea, of course, generate some more buzz ahead of the next series in spring and the imminent Christmas Special episode. After all, we already know a fifth season will be delayed for a year and again the Beeb refused to say if Tennant would be back for that, following a break while he pursues some stage work, but we do know that he is committed to three special episodes in 2009 so that we aren’t utterly starved of Who during the gap between seasons 4 and 5, so it would seem to me to be a bit odd for him to finish at the end of season 4 if he has already announced three special episodes for the following year. We’re going to be talking more about this one in coming months, aren’t we?

It’s funny how the article in which the BBC refuse to comment is hosted by the BBC…
