Not comics, but this simple illustration was done by Odile Crick, wife of Francis Crick, one of the co-discovers of the structure of DNA. Odile passed away earlier this month and I thought it was worth posting this simple, little picture she drew here – it isn’t a piece of 50s Pop Art, it isn’t ground-breaking comics art, but it is one of the most reproduced images of the last half century and she was the first to draw it, in this case for the 1953 April edition of the scientific journal Nature. Its the double helix structure of DNA that underwrites life itself, a simple black and white drawing of one of the greatest leaps forward in humanity’s understanding of themselves. I wonder what it was like to be asked to draw something which no-one else in our history had even known existed until that point? (link via Boing Boing)
