Books, Comics and cartoons

Author Jim Butcher announces on his site that he is working with Dabel Brothers to bring to life a comics adaptation of his excellent Dresden Files novels:

In the realm of “Coolest News Ever,” I am delerious with geeker joy to announce that Harry Dresden is making the leap to a new medium–graphic novels!

(Zap! Bing! Kapow! Fa-WAM!)

Working together with Dabel Brothers Productions, the Dresden Files are going to be translated into a graphic novel format. The current plan is to lay out the Dresden Files storyline at the rate of one of the novels every twelve to sixteen monthly issues, with occasional side-trips and independent stories thrown in. (Ever wonder what happened in Branson the month before Storm Front? How about what somebody saw in the lake in Minnesota between Storm Front and Fool Moon? Maybe I’ll get to tell those stories now! How cool is that?)

I will be assisting with the writing of the comics, and am also involved in the design and approval of the characters, art, tone, and so on. This is an actual hand-in-hand project in which I have full creative input and influence, and I’m friggin’ giddy about it. I mean, come on! Comic books!

I’m pretty pleased at this news – with so many science fiction and fantasy novelists now being poached to write for comics I’m actually surprised we haven’t seen more actual adaptations of those author’s existing works too. Dabel certainly have a track record in this respect, having already created comics and graphic novels based around the bestselling Anita Blake Vampire Hunter novels by Laurell K Hamilton and and the mega-selling George R R Martin’s fantasy work with the Hedge Knight. Regular readers of the blog will know that I am a huge fan of Jim’s books – published in the UK by the fine folks at Orbit – eagerly devouring each new one as soon as I can get my paws on it. I suspect they may adapt very well to comics, especially if, as Jim says, he is heavily involved in the process and is going to be allowed to add in little extra scenes too. Great news.
